I Must Confess

I love having company over. For a day, a couple of days, a week (I draw the line at any longer than that). But I must confess, I am always so glad to have my space back.

We’ve just had friends, a couple and their 2 year old son, visit from o/s for 8 days. Our little unit is perfect for the 3 of us, but as soon as you add more people to that (and a few suitcases!) things get really cramped. I’ve been looking at 4 bedroom rentals for the last few days, hoping that by the next time we have guests, we’ll be in a bigger place!

I find it hard enough to live in a small place with the 2 people I love the most, so add others into the mix, and it can be challenging. I think I was starting to get “over it”. And in saying that, our guests were probably the best you could hope for – they did a grocery shop, cooked meals (yummy ones!), and even washed their sheets and pillow cases this morning before they left! Of course now that they’re gone, it is very quiet, and looks very bare around here. And I think Nick is going to miss having a little buddy around to play with when he wakes up in the morning. But order has been restored, I finally have my office back, which means I am back to blogging! Now I just need the inspiration…

How do you go having visitors staying longer than 3 days?

    • It really throws everyone out. It was especially hard because Nick was still at school, so keeping that routine was difficult. We event completely forgot about his last swimming lesson b/c we decided to go to the beach with our guests!!

  1. You did so well Aroha, no wonder you are breathing a sigh of relief now that you have your space back again! We rarely have people over (normally a grandparent for a night or so tops) as the kids cannot deal with that sort of change long term but moreso as my husband and I really, really love our own space! Thanks again for linking up and good luck with the rental hunting!

    • We’re not in serious rental hunting mode just yet. I like to look on occasion just to see what kind of place we could afford. Maybe one day….and I understand how hard it must be for the kids to adjust to a change like that!

  2. I know exactly how you feel Aroha, I had my mum and sis for 6 weeks then a week break then in laws for 3 weeks, then 2 weeks break and am expecting my bro in a week. I loved seeing them but by the time my bro goes I will be glad of the rest! No matter how big your place is, it is never big enough. xx

    • oh my gosh, that is SO LONG to have guests! That’s the problem with living so far away from family – their visits are all or nothing! No happy mediums, or a couple hours a week 😦

  3. I have a 2 bedroom unit and it gets very small when I have visitors. I once had my parents and brother here for 2.5 weeks. It was a nightmare. I felt like everywhere I turned there was someone under my feet. Thankfully now when my parents come to town for any longer than a couple of days they get a motel room. It also means free pool too!

    • yikes, that would be tough! We have a 2 bed + study. But the study has our computer and workout bench in it, so not really a spare bedroom. it’s perfect for us…just not when you start adding more people!

  4. My teenagers (18 & 16) sometimes have friends stay over, it doesn’t worry me at all. But when it comes to people that I have to entertain and amuse, I find it exhausting, no matter how much I love Γ©m! 3 days would prob be enough for me too.

    • it is exhausting and it’s hard not to start to lose it a bit after a little while, but then when they leave you feel guilty and wish they were still there. Well, that’s what I do anyway!

  5. I only ever have my boys mates sleep over occasionally and that is more than enough for me! We rarely entertain people at our house. luckily among our friends nobody seems to mind. We all prefer going out to restaurants to catch up.

Glad you had a great weekend, anyway.

    • we only really have people stay over who are visiting from over seas. I figure they pay so much to come all this way to see us, I’m not going to make them pay extra to stay in a hotel! That’s the downfall of being on the other side of the world to family and good friends 😦

  6. I live by myself so TOTALLY get the own space thingo! I love having people come and stay with me but I am so used to alllllll the space being mine! lol…. Last year I was forced to move in with someone else (the joys of living in government teacher accommodation out west) and I was so nervous but it turned out wonderfully and I know have a life long friend out of it, but I won’t lie, I was excited to get my own space back when I moved towns!

  7. I hear you – we don’t have too many visitors because we literally don’t have any spare space – they say having friends to stay are like fish – are 3 days they start to stink! πŸ™‚ No offence to your friends, I’m sure they weren’t smelly
